Interview with Sylvia Weinstock, NY's Premier "Cake Lady"
New York Metroweddings recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sylvia Weinstock, the Famous "Cake Lady of Soho". Sylvia'a cakes are legendary, and she has become as famous as the people she bakes for. She has created Wedding Cakes for: Charlie Sheen, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, Alec Baldwin and Kim Basssinger, Eddie Murphy, Mariah Carey, and Jane Fonda, just to name a few.
These cakes, masterpieces of visual design and culinary art, can made to order for almost any taste. They can run from $350.00, to thousands of dollars, and they are always spectacular! These are truly Couture Cakes. The flowers that adorn her cakes, are botanically correct, and the detail is amazing. Her cakes have flown around the world, to accommodate her clients.
Sylvia produces more than 500 cakes a year in her Manhattan shop. She uses only the finest ingredients, and she treats all her brides like stars. She couldn't have a cake at her own wedding which was on a shoestring budget, so she takes special pride and delight in creating these cakes for all her brides. Have her create one for you!.
NYMW: What do you feel are the newest trends in Wedding Cake Design?
SW: There are several New trends in Wedding Cake Design. The most popular at the present is use of color. Tinting the icing a pale shade can really make the flowers stand out and enhance the all over look.
NYMW: What are the most considerations a bride should have, when choosing her wedding cake designer?
SW: The most important thing a bride should do when meeting with her cake designer is to taste the different types of cakes offered. Knowing the quality of the cake itself is the most important aspect of selecting a cake. Also check that the bakery is inspected by the Board of Health.
NYMW: What are your strongest influences when designing a particular cake?
SW: The strongest influence in designing a cake is the brides personality, the decor and architectual motifs of the room where the cake will be displayed, and the floral displays.
NYMW: Do you have a favorite combination of flavors or colors for your cakes?
SW: My favorite combination of flavors is yellow cake with lemon curd. Also, very popular is almond cake with apricot buttercream filling, but our most popular cake is chocolate cake with choclate mousse filling. My favorite design style is mixing differnt shapes in the tiers, such as round on the bottom, followed by octagon and maybe square on top.
NYMW: Describe your favorite client.
SW: My favorite client is the young woman who has dreamt of having a Sylvia Weinstock Cake since she was a little girl. The first wedding wedding she ever attended had my cake and she still remembers the way it looked and the fantastic taste. She told herself at that very moment, "Someday I'll have a Sylvia weinstock Cake at my wedding." All my brides are Queen for that day. They recieve individual attention. We listen!
